BEYOND VOLCANO

The Volcano in action
VOLCANOES occur where hot material leaks out from the Earth's interior. This usually happens at the margins of the tectonic plates. At constructive plate margins, along the mid- ocean ridges, the hot material from the mantle wells up and solidifies. The molten matter that is forced out at the surface is called lava. For the destructive plate margins the molten material comes from the breakdown of the plates themselves, and the volcanoes form an island arcs or in fold of mountains.
The lava is a differnet type from constructive margin lava, and forms different types of volcanoes. At destructive plate margins the lava is rich in silica. This makes stiff, producing steep-sided volcanoes such as the composite volcanoes and cinder cones volcanoes. Eruptions can ve very violent, and the rock formed is called andesite. At constructive plate margins the lava contains less silica. It is runny and erupts quietly, producing broad shield volcanoes and fissures volvanoes. The rock that form are called basalts. Most of the world's volcano are found along the margins of the plates.
